Overview
2-Day Santa Eulalia Birding Tour
Our 2-day Santa Eulalia birding tour is the most complete central-Peru endemic experience within reach of Lima — a full elevational transect from the desert foothills at 800 metres to the puna bogs of Ticlio at nearly 4,800 metres, taking in five habitats and the great majority of the region's range-restricted birds. Day one climbs the Santa Eulalia canyon through desert scrub, cactus slopes, riverside woodland and montane thickets to the first Polylepis; after a night in the valley, day two crosses the high grasslands to the glacial lakes and cushion bogs at the edge of the Junín National Reserve. It is a long, ambitious two days built for birders serious about endemics and high-Andes specialities, run at a birding pace with an expert guide.
The Santa Eulalia canyon is the classic site for central Peru's inter-Andean endemics, and day one works its full sweep. The lower and mid canyon hold Great Inca-Finch, Black-necked Woodpecker, Bronze-tailed Comet, Black Metaltail, Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail and Rufous-breasted Warbling-Finch, with Torrent Duck and White-capped Dipper on the river and Andean Condor riding the thermals over the Autisha bridge. As we climb into the upper valley, the montane scrub and the first patches of Polylepis (queñua) woodland add Dark-winged Miner, Junín Canastero and the sought-after, endemic White-cheeked Cotinga.
Day two climbs past 4,000 metres onto the Central Highway, into a completely different world of glacial lakes, cushion bogs and open puna at the gateway to the Junín National Reserve. This is the home of the critically endangered White-bellied Cinclodes and the exquisite Diademed Sandpiper-Plover, both cushion-bog specialists, alongside Dark-winged Miner, Junín Canastero, Black-breasted Hillstar, Olivaceous Thornbill, Puna Tinamou, Giant Coot, seedsnipes and rafts of high-Andean waterfowl and Chilean Flamingos, with Andean Condors a constant possibility overhead.
Between them, our three free eBird checklists for this tour — the Upper Santa Eulalia Valley, the Polylepis forest and the Marcapomacocha & Ticlio bogs — carry more than a dozen Peruvian endemics, and the lower-canyon list from our one-day tour rounds out the desert end. These are long days with a lot of driving on winding mountain roads and a night at altitude in the valley, but every hour on the road buys a new ecosystem and a new set of targets. We leave Lima before dawn on day one and return in the evening of day two.

Day by Day
Itinerary
Day 1 · 5:00 AM — Depart Lima
We leave Lima at first light and drive east into the Santa Eulalia canyon, reaching the first birding stops as the sun comes up. The lower valley's desert scrub and riverside willows are alive with activity in the cool early morning.
Lower canyon — willow forest & river
We work the riparian willow forest and the river for Black-necked Woodpecker, Peruvian Pygmy-Owl, Collared Warbling-Finch, Peruvian Sheartail and Blue-and-yellow Tanager, and scan the fast water for Torrent Duck and White-capped Dipper. These lower stops are also excellent for photography in the morning light.
Autisha — Great Inca-Finch & condors
Around the Autisha bridge we search the roadside scrub for the endemic Great Inca-Finch, one of the route's top targets, and watch the thermals for Andean Condor and Andean and White-collared Swifts. The dramatic gorge here is classic condor country.
Upper canyon — the hummingbird endemics
Climbing into the upper valley we reach the richest stretch for endemic hummingbirds — Bronze-tailed Comet and Black Metaltail — with Giant Hummingbird, Sparkling Violetear, Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail and Rusty-bellied Brush-Finch in the montane scrub. This is the Upper Santa Eulalia Valley, with its own downloadable checklist.
Late afternoon — Polylepis & overnight
In the late afternoon we reach the first patches of Polylepis (queñua) woodland, scanning the mossy canopy for the endemic White-cheeked Cotinga and the other Polylepis specialists. We spend the night in the Santa Eulalia Valley, ready for an early start into the high country.
Day 2 · dawn — into the high puna
We begin before dawn and climb steadily out of the valley onto the Central Highway, crossing 4,000 metres into the open puna at the gateway to the Junín National Reserve. The habitat changes completely — glacial lakes, cushion bogs and vast high grasslands.
Marcapomacocha — the bogs & lakes
On the Marcapomacocha bogs and lakes we search for the critically endangered White-bellied Cinclodes and the Diademed Sandpiper-Plover, with Dark-winged Miner, Junín Canastero, Black-breasted Hillstar, Olivaceous Thornbill, Puna Tinamou, Giant Coot and high-Andean waterfowl. Andean Condors and raptors are a regular sight over the ridges.
Ticlio pass & the descent to Lima
We work our way up to the Ticlio pass at nearly 4,800 metres for a final scan of the highest bogs before turning for home. We descend through the afternoon, arriving back in Lima in the evening after two of the most bird-rich days available from the capital.

“We just got back from a full day birding tour of the Sacred Valley with Wild Andes Tours. We couldn't be happier with the day. Our guide Frank was the perfect guide. He knows the exact areas to see specific birds which is major in leading these tours.”

“Alfredo with Wild Andes provided a wonderful vacation for my sister, cousin, and myself. He volunteered to coordinate all the tour including the Amazon and Lima environs. We are birders and he ensured that we had the best birding experience. We saw over 240 species of birds!”

“I had a wonderful day out with Alfredo along the coast south of Lima, first targeting some lesser known wetlands that gave some unexpected surprises, then heading to Pucusana for a boat trip out to see the boobies, cormorants, and penguins.”
