Overview

Junín Lake — Endemics & Pampas Cats

Our Junín Lake Endemics & Pampas Cats tour is the most ambitious birding expedition we run from Lima — three days and a full 3,000-metre elevational sweep from the Pacific desert to the high-Andean puna, built around some of the most range-restricted birds on the continent. Day one climbs the Santa Eulalia canyon for its inter-Andean endemics; day two crosses the puna above 4,000 metres, through the Marcapomacocha bogs, to the vast shore of Lake Junín; day three works the lake at dawn before the long descent home. Along the way we also look for the mammals of the high grasslands — the elusive Pampas Cat and Andean Fox — on a night drive out of Junín.

Day one is the Santa Eulalia valley, one of the richest endemic corridors near Lima. From the riparian willow woodland and torrent-fed river of the lower canyon — Torrent Duck, White-capped Dipper, Black-necked Woodpecker — we climb through the cactus slopes at the Autisha bridge, classic country for the endemic Great Inca-Finch and soaring Andean Condor, up to the montane scrub and the first Polylepis (queñua) woodland, where Bronze-tailed Comet, Black Metaltail, Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail and the endemic White-cheeked Cotinga wait. We overnight in the valley.

Day two climbs out of the valley and across the puna above 4,000 metres. On the Marcapomacocha bogs and the Ticlio pass we search the cushion bogs for the critically endangered White-bellied Cinclodes and the exquisite Diademed Sandpiper-Plover, with Dark-winged Miner, Junín Canastero, Black-breasted Hillstar and Olivaceous Thornbill on the surrounding puna. By midday we reach Lake Junín (Chinchaycocha), a Ramsar wetland at 4,080 metres and one of South America's great bird lakes, and bird its reedbeds and shore into the evening. After dark we head out to spotlight for Pampas Cat and Andean Fox before a night in the town of Junín.

Day three is an early return to the lake for the two birds it is famous for — the near-flightless Junín Grebe and the secretive Junín Rail, both found nowhere else on Earth — and anything we still need, with huge rafts of Andean waterfowl, Giant Coot and shorebirds as the backdrop. Our five free eBird checklists for this route — the lower and upper Santa Eulalia valley, the Polylepis forest, the Marcapomacocha & Ticlio bogs and the Lake Junín reserve — together cover hundreds of species and most of central Peru's high-Andes endemics. These are long days at altitude with a lot of driving, but few tours anywhere pack in so many ecosystems, endemics and rare wildlife; we have you back in Lima on the evening of day three.

Day by Day

Itinerary

  1. Day 1 · 5:00 AM — Depart Lima for Santa Eulalia

We leave Lima before dawn and drive east into the Santa Eulalia canyon, reaching the first stops as the sun comes up. The lower valley's willow woodland and river are alive with early activity.

  2. Day 1 · Lower & mid canyon — river and cactus slopes

We bird the riparian willow forest for Black-necked Woodpecker, Peruvian Sheartail and Collared Warbling-Finch, and the river for Torrent Duck and White-capped Dipper, then work the cactus slopes and the Autisha bridge for the endemic Great Inca-Finch and soaring Andean Condor.

  3. Day 1 · Upper canyon & Polylepis — overnight

Climbing higher, the montane scrub and the first Polylepis (queñua) woodland bring Bronze-tailed Comet, Black Metaltail, Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail and the endemic White-cheeked Cotinga. We spend the night in the Santa Eulalia Valley.

  4. Day 2 · dawn — the high puna & Marcapomacocha

We climb out of the valley onto the Central Highway, crossing 4,000 metres into the open puna. On the Marcapomacocha bogs and the Ticlio pass we search for the critically endangered White-bellied Cinclodes, Diademed Sandpiper-Plover, Dark-winged Miner and Junín Canastero.

  5. Day 2 · midday — arrive Lake Junín

By midday we reach the shore of Lake Junín (Chinchaycocha), a Ramsar wetland at 4,080 m, and bird its reedbeds and margins for Andean waterfowl, Giant Coot, Puna Ibis and shorebirds. There is time to settle in and scan the vast lake.

  6. Day 2 · after dark — Pampas Cat spotlighting; overnight in Junín

After dinner we head out onto the puna with spotlights in search of Pampas Cat and Andean Fox, the mammals that give the tour its name. We overnight in the town of Junín.

  7. Day 3 · dawn — the Lake Junín endemics

We return to the lake at first light for the two birds it is famous for — the near-flightless Junín Grebe and the secretive Junín Rail — along with anything still missing and the huge rafts of waterfowl and shorebirds. This is the birding climax of the trip.

  8. Day 3 · afternoon — the long return to Lima

After a final scan of the lake we begin the scenic descent back across the puna and down to the coast, arriving in Lima in the evening. Three days, three ecosystems and a suite of birds and mammals found almost nowhere else.

We just got back from a full day birding tour of the Sacred Valley with Wild Andes Tours. We couldn't be happier with the day. Our guide Frank was the perfect guide. He knows the exact areas to see specific birds which is major in leading these tours.

I recently returned from an 8-day custom expedition to Manu National Park with Wild Andes Tours and I could not be happier with the experience. This was my first time in the Amazon, so I wanted something truly personal and far from the typical “off-the-shelf” tour.

Alfredo with Wild Andes provided a wonderful vacation for my sister, cousin, and myself. He volunteered to coordinate all the tour including the Amazon and Lima environs. We are birders and he ensured that we had the best birding experience. We saw over 240 species of birds!
