Overview
Northern Peru
Northern Peru is the promised land of Neotropical birding — a region so rich in range-restricted endemics and spectacular hummingbirds that no serious world lister leaves it off the map. Our 11-day Northern Peru birding and photography tour runs from the wetlands and desert of the Lima coast to the cloud forests of the Alto Mayo and the foothills of San Martín, taking in the legendary Owlet Lodge at Abra Patricia, the Marvelous Spatuletail at Huembo and the hummingbird gardens of Waqanki. It is built around feeding stations and lodges designed for photography, so the birds come close.
The tour opens on the Lima coast, easing into Peruvian birding at the Ramsar wetland of Pantanos de Villa, the Humboldt-Current seabird cove of Pucusana and the fog-oasis of Lomas de Lachay, where the first coastal endemics — Surf Cinclodes, Coastal Miner and Cactus Canastero — go on the list. Then we fly north to Tarapoto and the lush lowland and foothill forests of San Martín.
The heart of the trip is the humid cloud forest of the Alto Mayo, where the Owlet Lodge at Abra Patricia sits among some of the richest birding on Earth. Here we search for the tiny Long-whiskered Owlet — a bird found nowhere else and unknown to science until 1976 — alongside the endemic Royal Sunangel, the Ochre-fronted and Rusty-tinged Antpittas at their feeding stations, Johnson's Tody-Flycatcher and a bewildering procession of mixed tanager flocks. A short drive away, the feeders of Huembo host the Marvelous Spatuletail, arguably the most extraordinary hummingbird in the world.
Lower down, the hummingbird gardens of Waqanki near Moyobamba dazzle with Rufous-crested Coquette and dozens of other hummingbirds, while the foothill forest holds the endemic Painted Manakin, Ash-throated Antwren and Koepcke's Hermit; the tour also takes in an Oilbird colony, the Cordillera Escalera above Tarapoto and a night or two of owling. We run it as an 11-day small-group photography tour (customisable in length), staying at comfortable birding lodges with feeders and hides — the definitive introduction to the birding megaregion of Northern Peru, and every site comes with its own free downloadable checklist.

Itinerary
Day 1 — Arrival in Lima
You are met at Lima's Jorge Chávez airport and transferred to a hotel in Miraflores to settle in before the birding begins. An easy start to a big trip.
Day 2 — The Lima coast
A full day on the coast — the Ramsar wetland of Pantanos de Villa for rails, waterfowl and the coastal Black Rail, a boat trip at Pucusana for Humboldt-Current seabirds and the endemic Surf Cinclodes, and the desert scrub of the Azpitia Valley.
Day 3 — Lomas de Lachay
North to the fog-oasis of Lomas de Lachay for its coastal endemics — Coastal and Thick-billed Miners, Cactus Canastero and Raimondi's Yellow-Finch — and the desert specialities of Quebrada Guayabito, before returning to Lima.
Day 4 — Fly to Tarapoto & Waqanki
A morning flight to Tarapoto and transfer to the Waqanki Lodge near Moyobamba, spending the afternoon at the famous hummingbird feeders for Rufous-crested Coquette and more, with night birding for owls and potoos.
Day 5 — Waqanki foothills
A full day at Waqanki — the Masked Duck hide, and the lodge trails and Quebrada Mishquiyaquillo ridge for foothill specialities including the endemic Painted Manakin and Ash-throated Antwren.
Day 6 — Arena Blanca to Abra Patricia
We visit the Arena Blanca feeders for tinamous, quail-doves and antpittas at close range, then climb into the cloud forest to the Owlet Lodge at Abra Patricia for the first afternoon in the high forest.
Day 7 — Abra Patricia & Alto Nieva
A full day birding the cloud forest of Abra Patricia and Fundo Alto Nieva — mixed tanager flocks, the endemic Royal Sunangel, and the antpitta feeding stations where Ochre-fronted and Rusty-tinged Antpittas come to worms.
Day 8 — Huembo & night owling
A day trip to the Huembo reserve for the Marvelous Spatuletail at its feeders, with more cloud-forest birding along the way, and a night search for the Long-whiskered Owlet and screech-owls.
Day 9 — Huembo & the canopy tower
A final morning around Huembo and the Abra Patricia canopy tower for a treetop view of the mixed flocks, tanagers and cotingas of the Alto Mayo.
Day 10 — Down to Tarapoto
We descend toward Tarapoto, stopping for an Oilbird colony and the Ricuricocha lake hide for waterbirds and marsh species.
Day 11 — Cordillera Escalera & return

“I recently returned from an 8-day custom expedition to Manu National Park with Wild Andes Tours and I could not be happier with the experience. This was my first time in the Amazon, so I wanted something truly personal and far from the typical “off-the-shelf” tour.”

“Alfredo with Wild Andes provided a wonderful vacation for my sister, cousin, and myself. He volunteered to coordinate all the tour including the Amazon and Lima environs. We are birders and he ensured that we had the best birding experience. We saw over 240 species of birds!”
