Abra Málaga & Polylepis Forest
The road over the Abra Málaga pass, climbing from Ollantaytambo to 4,300 metres, is one of the most celebrated birding transects in Peru. Its treasure is the stunted Polylepis woodland clinging to the high slopes — among the most threatened forest types on Earth — home to the critically endangered Royal Cinclodes, the endemic White-browed Tit-Spinetail and Marcapata Spinetail, Line-fronted Canastero and the dazzling Giant Conebill.
The humid east side of the pass adds a completely different cast — hummingbirds like Sword-billed Hummingbird and Collared Inca among mixed flocks that get richer with every switchback down toward the cloud forest.
