Overview

Machu Picchu Birding Tour

Our Machu Picchu Birding Tour turns the world's most famous ruin into a four-day birding journey across the best of the Cusco region — the Sacred Valley, the legendary Abra Málaga road and the cloud forest of the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary itself. Rather than a rushed day-trip, it strings together three of southern Peru's richest birding landscapes into one unhurried loop, pairing a guided visit to the citadel with dedicated birding at every stop. For anyone searching for a Machu Picchu birding tour that is as much about the birds as the archaeology, this is the complete Cusco endemic experience — and every site comes with its own free downloadable checklist.

Day one explores the Sacred Valley of the Incas, from the highland lake of Piuray above Chinchero — where Andean Goose, Puna Teal and Chilean Flamingo work the water — through the hummingbird-thronged feeders of the cloud-forest sanctuary above Yanahuara, down to the Río Vilcanota at Ollantaytambo, where the rapids hold Torrent Duck and the gardens, scrub and ruins add the endemic Bearded Mountaineer, Inca Wren, Cuzco Brushfinch and Green-and-white Hummingbird. It is a gentle, scenic introduction to the Cusco endemics amid some of the finest Inca architecture in Peru.

Day two climbs the legendary Abra Málaga road above Ollantaytambo — one of the great birding roads of the Andes — from humid cloud forest and Chusquea bamboo through ancient Polylepis woodland to the 4,316 m pass. Here we search the queñua for the critically endangered Royal Cinclodes and the endemic White-browed Tit-Spinetail, two of the rarest birds in the Andes, with Marcapata Spinetail, Unstreaked Tit-Tyrant and a dazzling suite of mountain-tanagers and hummingbirds across the elevational bands.

The final two days belong to Machu Picchu. We take the train down the Urubamba gorge to Aguas Calientes, birding the river and cloud forest for Andean Cock-of-the-rock, White-capped Dipper, Golden-headed Quetzal and the endemic Masked Fruiteater, then spend a morning at the citadel itself — timed for the quiet hours — combining the guided archaeological visit with birding the sanctuary trails. Run as a small-group tour with expert local guides, it can produce a big haul of Cusco endemics from the valley floor to the treeline.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1 — Sacred Valley

From Cusco we drop into the Sacred Valley, birding the highland lake of Piuray above Chinchero for Andean Goose, Puna Teal and Chilean Flamingo, the cloud-forest hummingbird sanctuary above Yanahuara for its endemic hummingbirds, and the Río Vilcanota around Ollantaytambo for Torrent Duck, Bearded Mountaineer, Inca Wren, Cuzco Brushfinch and a first haul of Cusco endemics. Overnight in Ollantaytambo.

  2. Day 2 — Abra Málaga

A full day crossing the Abra Málaga pass above Ollantaytambo, working the elevational bands from humid cloud forest up through Polylepis woodland to the 4,316 m puna. The queñua holds the critically endangered Royal Cinclodes and White-browed Tit-Spinetail, with mountain-tanagers, thistletails and hummingbirds along the way, before we return to the valley for the night.

  3. Day 3 — Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes

Take the morning train from Ollantaytambo down the Urubamba gorge to Aguas Calientes, birding the river and lower cloud forest on arrival for Torrent Duck, White-capped Dipper, Andean Cock-of-the-rock and the endemic Inca Wren. Afternoon and dusk birding the gorge and forest edges around town, with a chance of Golden-headed Quetzal. Overnight in Aguas Calientes.

  4. Day 4 — Machu Picchu

A guided visit to the citadel at its quietest, combined with birding the sanctuary's upper cloud forest — Masked Fruiteater, Golden-headed Quetzal, Cuzco Brushfinch, tanagers and hummingbirds — before the return train to Ollantaytambo and transfer to Cusco.

We just got back from a full day birding tour of the Sacred Valley with Wild Andes Tours. We couldn't be happier with the day. Our guide Frank was the perfect guide. He knows the exact areas to see specific birds which is major in leading these tours.

Alfredo with Wild Andes provided a wonderful vacation for my sister, cousin, and myself. He volunteered to coordinate all the tour including the Amazon and Lima environs. We are birders and he ensured that we had the best birding experience. We saw over 240 species of birds!

I had a wonderful day out with Alfredo along the coast south of Lima, first targeting some lesser known wetlands that gave some unexpected surprises, then heading to Pucusana for a boat trip out to see the boobies, cormorants, and penguins.
