Overview
Laguna de Batuco
Laguna de Batuco is a shallow lake and reed marsh on the northern edge of Santiago, and the shortest, easiest birding outing near the capital. In a single morning the open water and totora reeds hold a big cast of waterbirds, with very little walking — an ideal first contact or a relaxed half-day.
The reeds give the jewel-like Many-colored Rush-Tyrant and the skulking Wren-like Rushbird, while the water holds White-tufted and Great Grebes, Black-necked Swan, Rosy-billed Pochard and Cinnamon Teal, and all three of central Chile's coots — Red-gartered, Red-fronted and White-winged — often side by side.
