Overview

El Yeso & Cajón del Maipo

Climbing the Cajón del Maipo to the cushion-bogs of the Yeso Valley (2,500–3,500 m), this day targets the coveted Diademed Sandpiper-Plover, which breeds in these high vegas. It is a big-mountain day with dramatic reservoir-and-peak scenery, and an optional lunch and wine tasting in the Maipo valley on the way down.

The bogs and streams hold the Diademed Sandpiper-Plover, Grey-breasted Seedsnipe, Creamy-rumped Miner and Black-fronted Ground-Tyrant, with Torrent Duck on the river below and Andean Condor and Mountain Caracara over the ridges.

I had a single day in Lima to get a few birds and after checking out the options Wilde Andes was the best for me. My guide, Alejandro, took me straight to his favorite coastal spot south of Lima and promptly turned up a dozen Least Seedsnipe.

I had an amazing few days with Wild Andes Tours and can honestly say it was one of the highlights of my trip to Peru. I joined a three-day trip to Junín hoping to see a few dream species, especially the Pampas Cat.
