The Reserva Nacional de Paracas — Peru's oldest marine protected area, where the Humboldt Current meets the desert. Its bay mudflats, salt lagoons at Salinas de Otuma and wave-battered beaches (Lagunillas, La Mina, Playa Roja) hold Chilean and Andean Flamingos, the endangered Peruvian Tern, American and Blackish Oystercatchers, Peruvian Thick-knee, Surfbird and a long roll of migratory shorebirds, with five south-coast endemics: Coastal and Thick-billed Miners, Surf Cinclodes, Slender-billed Finch and Raimondi's Yellow-Finch.
