The humid lower cloud forest of the Abra Málaga road above Ollantaytambo, up to around 3,400 m — the richest, most colourful band of the transect. Mixed tanager flocks, Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Blue-banded Toucanet, Crimson-mantled Woodpecker, Barred Fruiteater and Grass-green Tanager work the Chusquea bamboo and forest edge, with the endemic Bearded Mountaineer and Masked Fruiteater.
